LEARNING AND THE NATURAL WORLD

BY JULIE WATKINS

According to Green Child Magazine, “Spending time in nature can lead to some of the most enjoyable and profound learning experiences.”

Nature-based learning connects academic disciplines while enlivening the senses and invigorating the body. Curiosity and inquiry, exploration and experimentation are encouraged as the mind catalogs, analyzes, and compares.

We find our place in the world as we are immersed in the natural flow of plant and animal life cycles. The seasons and weather patterns are part of the dance of life and unstructured outdoor play and nature-based learning help develop environmental stewardship.

Simple, fun exercises help children develop healthful bodies and happy minds. A bucket and shovel, a collection of rocks, a woodland dwelling built by their own hands will produce meaningful learning and bring them hours of pleasure.
